Red Cell
The term comes from military and intelligence practice, where a red cell is a small, elite unit given one job: think like the enemy. It attacks its own side’s plans, systems and defenses to challenge assumptions and find what the defenders cannot see themselves.
In cybersecurity, the idea is the same. A red cell works from the attacker’s side of the table, using malware analysis, exploit research, and the study of attacker tradecraft to uncover emerging threats and help organizations prepare for what’s next.
At WatchGuard, Red Cell is our elite threat research team, dedicated to understanding attackers and helping defenders stay ahead. The team discovers and studies the latest malware and internet attacks, using data from WatchGuard’s Firebox Feed, internal and partner threat intelligence, and a research honeynet. Its work powers the WatchGuard Global Threat Report, the Ransomware Tracker, the Red Cell Blog, and the Red Cell Podcast.
Red Cell Blog
The Red Cell Chronicles blog is a leading source of information about IT and business security. Our researchers break down the threats behind the headlines, from new malware and actively exploited vulnerabilities to the tactics of state-sponsored threat actors. Featured research includes Red Cell Threat Briefings, which track how world events become cyber risk.
Our editorial team simplifies complex cybersecurity concepts, solutions and tools into easily understood and actionable information, so defenders know what a threat means and what to do about it.
