What is the difference between agentic AI and generative AI?
While traditional generative AI (like a standard chatbot) is reactive – it waits for you to give it a prompt and then generates a response – agentic AI is proactive. It is designed to function as an "agent" that can reason, plan, and use tools to achieve a high-level goal with minimal human supervision.
What is agentic AI?
Agentic AI refers to artificial intelligence systems that possess agency – the ability to independently set goals, plan multi-step actions, and execute tasks with minimal human intervention.
Unlike traditional "reactive" AI (such as standard chatbots) that only respond when prompted, agentic AI is proactive; it can observe its environment, reason through complex problems, and use external tools (such as APIs or databases) to complete an objective from start to finish.
Why does agentic AI matter?
Agentic AI marks a shift from AI as a "content generator" to AI as a "digital worker". It is becoming essential for several reasons:
- Autonomous End-to-End Workflows: It can handle entire processes rather than single tasks. For example, instead of just drafting a travel itinerary, an agentic system can proactively check your calendar, search for flights, and book them using your credit card permissions.
- Massive Productivity Gains: Automating time-consuming administrative and repetitive work (such as research, scheduling, or data management) enables humans to focus on high-value, strategic, and creative efforts.
- Real-Time Adaptability: These systems use feedback loops to learn and self-correct. If a step in a plan fails – such as a preferred hotel being sold out – the AI can independently reflect and choose an alternative without needing a new human prompt.
