Adware

Adware tracks your data and triggers intrusive ads. Learn how to identify adware to stay secure.

How Does Adware Work?

Adware gets onto your device through "bundling." When you download a free utility or game, adware is tucked away in the installer. Once active, it can:

  • Pop-up Ads: Flood your desktop or browser with hard-to-close windows
  • Browser Hijacking: Change your default homepage or search engine to a site full of ads
  • Redirects: Send you to sketchy websites when you try to visit a legitimate one
  • Data Tracking: Secretly monitor your browsing habits to sell your "profile" to advertisers

Is Adware the Same as a Virus?

Not exactly. While a virus is designed to damage files or steal passwords, adware is designed to make money through clicks. However, they share a "gray area":

  • Grayware/PUPs: Many security programs categorize adware as a Potentially Unwanted Program (PUP)
  • The Risk: Malicious adware can create "backdoors" that let actual malware or ransomware onto your system

How can I Spot Adware?

Watch for adware infection if:

  1. Your browser’s homepage changes without your permission
  2. Your PC or phone is running slower than usual
  3. You see ads in places they don't belong (like your Windows desktop)
  4. Your battery drains quickly due to background tracking
