Smarter, Faster Wi‑Fi Management with WatchGuard AP Updates

Keeping Wi‑Fi environments secure, reliable, and easy to manage is a constant challenge, especially at scale. That’s why we’re introducing a set of powerful updates to WatchGuard Access Points and WatchGuard Cloud. These new capabilities simplify operations, speed up troubleshooting, and help ensure networks stay secure and optimized with less effort.

Here’s what’s coming.

Automated AP Firmware Upgrades

Beta: June 4, 2026

GA (expected): June 18, 2026

Keeping access points up to date shouldn’t require constant manual effort. With Automated AP Firmware Upgrades, operators can define recurring maintenance windows and let WatchGuard Cloud handle firmware updates automatically.

Key capabilities include:

  • Automatic firmware upgrades when APs first connect to WatchGuard Cloud
  • Flexible scheduling options (weekly or monthly windows)
  • Staggered upgrades to avoid network disruption
  • Support for up to 10 schedules per account
  • A built-in 4-week grace period after firmware release
  • Alerts for upcoming and completed upgrades

Why this matters:
Today, firmware upgrades are manual, which slows down the adoption of security patches and new features. With automation, operators can “set it and forget it,” reducing effort and costs while accelerating patch adoption by up to 50%. At the same time, staggered rollouts help maintain network stability.

New AP Channel History Report

GA: June 4, 2026

The new AP Channel History Report provides deep visibility into how and why access points change channels over time.

Key capabilities include:

  • Visual channel history graphs for each AP (2.4 GHz, 5 GHz, and future 6 GHz)
  • Detailed logs showing every channel change with timestamps and reasons
  • Root-cause visibility (DCS decisions, radar detection, reboots, config changes)
  • Single AP and multi-AP views (up to 3 devices)

Why this matters:
When troubleshooting Wi‑Fi issues, knowing the “what” isn’t enough; you need the “why.” This report enables faster root-cause analysis by showing exactly why channels changed. It also helps identify interference patterns and optimize channel planning.

Few platforms provide this level of historical and causal insight, giving WatchGuard a clear advantage.

Client Journey Timeline

Milestone 1 (Client Timeline) GA: May 28, 2026
Milestone 2 (Client Journey) GA (expected): July 30, 2026

The new Client Journey Timeline delivers powerful diagnostics for wireless client behavior in two stages.

Milestone 1 – Client Timeline

A detailed per-client view showing connection events:

  • Association, authentication, roaming, and disconnection events
  • Signal strength, band, and channel details
  • Clear reasons for transitions (e.g., wrong password, low RSSI, DHCP failure, ACL block)

Milestone 2 – Client Journey

A higher-level, aggregated view:

  • Funnel visualization from total clients → associated → authenticated → connected
  • Fast identification of where clients are failing at scale

Why this matters:
Troubleshooting Wi‑Fi issues is often time-consuming and fragmented. This tool consolidates data into a single location, enabling faster, more accurate diagnosis. Operators can immediately see not only where failures occur but why they happen.

For service providers, the aggregated view makes it easy to identify systemic issues across entire locations.

AP Firmware v3.2

GA: May 28, 2026

Firmware 3.2 brings key improvements and enables new cloud features across WatchGuard Wi‑Fi 6 access points (AP432, AP332CR, AP430CR, AP230W).

What’s included:

  • QSDK 12.2 upgrade with improved Dynamic Channel Selection (DCS)
  • Enhanced client balancing for better performance
  • Support for AP Channel History reporting
  • Support for Client Journey and Timeline
  • Third-party captive portal integration (ADIPSYS)
  • Bug fixes and security patches

Why this matters:
This release strengthens security with the latest patches while improving network performance through smarter channel selection and load balancing. It also unlocks key cloud capabilities, such as Channel History and Client diagnostics.

WatchGuard is targeting 75% of active APs upgraded within six weeks, making automation and visibility more important than ever.

Bringing It All Together

These updates are designed to work together:

  • Automation ensures APs stay current without manual effort
  • Visibility provides deep insight into network and client behavior
  • Diagnostics accelerate troubleshooting and reduce downtime
  • Performance improvements deliver a better Wi‑Fi experience

Together, they help operators manage Wi‑Fi networks more efficiently, reduce operational overhead, and maintain a strong security posture with less effort.

Start planning your rollout with Firmware v3.2, and enable the new capabilities as they become available through June and July.
