Mobile VPN with SSL Client Version Compatibility Mismatch with OS (macOS)

Applies To: Cloud-managed Fireboxes, Locally-managed Fireboxes

When the Mobile VPN with SSL client version is incompatible with the macOS version installed on the Mac of a VPN user, installation failures, connection issues, or unstable VPN tunnels can occur. Incompatibilities might appear after you upgrade macOS or install a different version of the Mobile VPN with SSL client. As a result, Mobile VPN with SSL connections might fail to establish or disconnect unexpectedly.

Symptoms

When the macOS version and Mobile VPN with SSL client version are incompatible, you might experience these symptoms on the macOS device:

  • Mobile VPN with SSL client installation errors or errors when the client tries to connect.
  • Mobile VPN with SSL connections only succeed after you upgrade or downgrade to a supported client version.
  • Intermittent disconnections or unstable tunnel behavior.
  • macOS warnings about unknown, blocked, or unverified system extensions (common with older client versions).

Diagnostic Steps

On the affected device:

  1. To identify the installed Mobile VPN with SSL client version, select About from the Mobile VPN with SSL client menu.
  2. Identify the macOS version and build. For example, macOS Ventura 13 or macOS Sequoia 15. For more information, go to macOS version (external link).
  3. Compare the client and macOS versions with the supported macOS client versions in the Operating System Compatibility Matrix of the Fireware Release Notes.
  4. Update the client to a supported version, then try to reproduce the issue.

If the issue started after a macOS update, verify whether Apple introduced any incompatibility changes. For example, macOS Ventura 13.0 and higher no longer accepts SSL connections to untrusted self‑signed certificates by default.

Possible Causes and Solutions

Possible Cause Solution
Install the most recent compatible Mobile VPN with SSL client for macOS release to fix a known issue.

To update the Mobile VPN with SSL client:

  1. Download the latest supported Mobile VPN with SSL client for macOS from the WatchGuard software downloads page.
  2. Install the .DMG file (macOS administrator rights required).
  3. Import the configuration file, if necessary.
  4. Open the app and attempt to connect.

For more information, go to Download, Install, and Connect the Mobile VPN with SSL Client.

macOS update removes or blocks extensions required by older clients.

Install a Mobile VPN with SSL client version that WatchGuard specifically built and tested for the current macOS release. For more information, go to the Operating System Compatibility Matrix of the Fireware Release Notes.

If macOS blocks the required system or kernel extension, approve the extension in System Settings.

To approve a blocked Mobile VPN with SSL extension on macOS:

  1. To trigger a block, try to connect with Mobile VPN with SSL.
  2. Go to System Settings > Privacy & Security.
  3. For the blocked extension, click Allow.
  4. Authenticate as an administrator.
  5. Restart the computer.
Client version is no longer supported for the installed macOS release.
  • Use a Mobile VPN with SSL client build that the current macOS version supports.
  • Do not use old client versions with new macOS releases. Verify client compatibility after you upgrade macOS.
