Installation of Endpoint Security and Error 58

Applies To: WatchGuard Advanced EPDR, WatchGuard EPDR, WatchGuard EDR

WatchGuard Endpoint Security might falsely report that an uninstalled third-party antivirus program is still installed. This is because registry entries for the program remain in the registry of the computer. If this is the case, this error might show:

Error in server communication (Error 58).

This issue occurs because WatchGuard Endpoint Security assumes that there is a third-party program installed, and tries to run the uninstaller of the program, which no longer exists.

This topic describes scenarios where you might experience the error and explains why it stops a WatchGuard Agent installation.

Error 58 Occurs When Endpoint Agent Tries to Open an Installer URL

You might receive Error 58 when the endpoint agent installation process tries to open a URL to download and install the uninstaller of a third-party antivirus product.

The error indicates that remnants of a third-party antivirus product remain on the device. When the endpoint agent installer calls the uninstaller of the third-party antivirus product, the uninstaller does not exist or is damaged. To fix this issue, use a generic third-party antivirus uninstaller and remove the remnants of the third-party antivirus product.

If the issue persists, go to the Verify Communication and Collect Data sections of this topic.

Error 58 When Endpoint Agent Tries to Open a Signature File URL

You might receive Error 58 when the endpoint agent installation process tries to open a signature file from a URL. For example:

  • http://corporate.updates.pandasecurity.com

This type of error might relate to connectivity problems at a specific time of day or relate to the time it takes for the endpoint agent install process to replicate signatures in all nodes. For this type of error, wait approximately 20 minutes and click Retry. In most cases, a retry resolves the issue.

If the issue persists, go to the Verify Communication and Collect Data sections of this topic.

Verify Communication

If you cannot resolve an endpoint agent install issue, verify your connection and collect information to help Support troubleshoot your case.

  1. Verify access to the endpoint security product. For more information, go to the URLs used by Panda and WatchGuard Endpoint Security products KB article. (external)
  2. Use the Check Certificates tool to retrieve and install missing root and certificate authority (CA) certificates that your endpoint security product requires. For more information, go to PSInfo Check Certificates.

Collect Data

To get help with the uninstallation of a third-party product that endpoint security product does not detect, you can use the PSInfo tool to provide diagnostic logs to help Support troubleshoot your issue. For more information, go to Get Started with PSInfo.
