Binh Duong Post Office (BDPO) provides postal, fixed and mobile telephony, and Internet and data communication services to the majority of businesses and residences in Binh Duong province. Operating under the parent company, Vietnam Posts and Telecommunications Corporation (VNPT Group), BDPO benefits from a robust business climate and modern industrialized infrastructure due to its proximity to Ho Chi Minh City. Binh Duong province is home to a vast number of manufacturers, including foreign companies like Nike, Adidas, H&M and McDonald's. With the increase of corporate activity, upgrading to high-speed, high-capacity, and high-quality connection and transmission equipment is a necessity.
Le Doan Hop, Minister of Information and Communications, stated that throughout 2009, the Ministry will focus on further expansion of the information technology and telecommunications infrastructure across the country's 58 provinces and five centrally controlled municipalities. The government continues to promote an open market, with both private and foreign investments, in a bid to compete globally with its telecommunications network and services to consumers and enterprises alike.
By 2010, Vietnam plans to develop a world-class national information communications infrastructure, using optical, broadband, and satellite access across the country. BDPO, with its dispersed workforce of 1,000, operates a massive network, connecting the main post office with smaller outposts located in remote towns and villages across the province.
Nguyen Minh Cuong is responsible for securing, monitoring, and controlling the network of ADSL Internet links, as well as IP and MegaWAN (MPLS) cables at BDPO headquarters in the Thu Dau Mot District. Not only do Nguyen and his team have to secure heavy Internet traffic across the province, they have to approve the Internet access policies.
The incumbent Trend Micro deployment could no longer keep pace with BDPO's growing demands, so Nguyen sought a more rigorous Internet security solution that would enable BDPO to utilize total bandwidth for all Internet connections over policy-based routing. Similarly, Nexusway's Load Balancer was not able to guarantee logging security, given BDPO's surge in network usage. Taking all of BDPO's needs into consideration, a unified threat management (UTM) network security solution that could effectively eliminate server instability and stop spam, viruses, spyware, and other types of malware was the best choice.
In their search to find the best possible solution and assess competitive alternatives to ensure a consistently secure network for BDPO's distributed offices, Nguyen's team turned to FTP Information System (FIS), a trusted network-security solutions provider. FIS convinced BDPO management that WatchGuard was the optimal vendor to provide load balancing for outbound Internet connections, as well as virus protection, intrusion prevention, and URL filtering.
With guidance from FIS, BDPO opted to implement a Fireware® Pro 9.1 UTM solution. The system's integrated deep-application inspection, anti-spyware, anti-spam, anti-virus, URL filtering, and intrusion prevention features provided the comprehensive protection BDPO required to attain operational efficiency and high reliability. WatchGuard offers unique security architecture that allowed for easy installation and deployment, as well as providing the requisite assortment of policy configurations.
BDPO was able to immediately recognize the benefits of the easy and intuitive management tools that come with WatchGuard appliances - WatchGuard System Manager, WatchGuard Firebox System Manager, and HostWatch - implementing comprehensive network security for all province offices. Supporting four WAN connections, BDPO was able to use the WatchGuard system across four ADSL Internet links, enabling total bandwidth optimization. In addition, the Internet Load Balancer and Security Monitor features are providing effective network-wide security with seamless management.
All WatchGuard UTM solutions are built on proxy-based architecture, and provide BDPO with intelligent, layered security for advanced networking and traffic-management capabilities, as well as simplified network configurability and administration. With multiple security features integrated on one hardware platform, the time and expense related to managing multiple point solutions is greatly reduced, resulting in a cost-effective solution with uncompromised performance.
Monitoring and managing the network is made easy thanks to an intuitive graphic-based console that allows administrators to exercise granular control with minimum effort, minimizing system complexity. Centralized and easy-to-use management tools have greatly reduced the total cost of ownership for BDPO. In addition, FIS and Blitz IT Consultants Pte. Ltd. are providing third-party professional services to support the installation, so Nguyen and his team can focus on delivering value-added services to the organization's stakeholders.
"WatchGuard effectively met our requirements to provide for a secure platform to fulfill our current needs of connecting our dispersed workforce across the country. The system is also flexible and scalable to allow for our planned growth. This intuitive network solution is enabling us to focus on our core business, while maximizing return on investment, lowering total cost of ownership, and improving efficiency," says Nguyen Minh Cuong.
