Unsecured Wireless Networks

Take Control of Your Wireless Network Airspace

Experts estimate that 63% of all Internet traffic in the world will travel over Wi-Fi by 2019. Much of this traffic will come from the workplace, as reduced costs and easier management continue to spur the adoption of wireless networks. Unfortunately, rapid rollouts of wireless networks often come at the cost of reduced security.

63% of all internet traffic will happen over Wi-Fi by 2019

The number of public “Wi-Fi hotspots” to grow from 22.7 million in 2014 to 289.3 million in 2018

Cellular carriers will offload nearly 60% of mobile data traffic to Wifi networks over the next four years

What Makes Wireless Networks Vulnerable?

Wireless network attacks are numerous and often devastating. The seriousness of these threats is often overlooked or ignored by IT staff. Something as simple as an employee connecting their own wireless access point could allow an attacker to access your protected network without physically stepping foot inside your business.

An attacker could introduce a malicious access point to masquerade as your trusted corporate Wi-Fi to trick your employees’ devices into connecting to their network. Once connected, the attacker could perform Man-in-the-Middle attacks or simply sniff out authentication credentials from your network traffic.

Sometimes attackers simply want to disrupt your normal productivity. Motivations for Denial-of-Service attacks vary, but can include revenge for a perceived slight or a distraction from another attack. Regardless of the motivation, Denial-of-Service attacks always have the goal of preventing legitimate connections to your wireless network.

How can I protect myself?

If you secure your wireless network with a password, you may feel you’re protected from eavesdroppers. The reality is if you use an older protocol though, like WEP, attackers can quickly and easily crack your wireless password. Even more secure protocols are vulnerable to brute force attacks if a password isn’t strong enough.

Even classic protections like MAC address filtering are no longer sufficient in protecting against modern wireless attacks as attackers now commonly spoof hardware addresses to match protected clients or even authorized access points. WatchGuard’s Cloud-Managed Wi-Fi Wireless Intrusion Prevention System (WIPS) provides more advanced protection against rogue access points, Evil Twins, and other wireless threats.
