WatchGuard supports Safer Internet Day with Friendly WiFi

The sign of safe browsing for children and parents

WatchGuard is doing its bit for today’s Safer Internet Day by promoting the Friendly Wifi scheme, designed to help children stay safe online by identifying public places offering secure filtered WiFi. Set up by the UK Government with support from the UK Council for Child Internet Safety and manged by the RDI trade organisation, the scheme means that children, parents and guardians can look for the colourful Friendly WiFi logo to be sure that the network has been tested and verified to block pornographic and other inappropriate websites.

Safer Internet Day on is organised by the UK Safer Internet Centre, coordinated by Childnet International, the South West Grid for Learning and the Internet Watch Foundation and is co-funded by the European Commission's Safer Internet Programme.

WatchGuard is an accredited Friendly WiFi Approved Provider, meaning that businesses or public facilities using WatchGuard secure WiFi solutions have the correct filtering to ensure inappropriate material remains blocked to users. Once checked by RDI, they can then join the scheme and display the logo.

“With children spending more time on their mobile devices, delivering safe online WiFi is a growing concern for parents, guardians and teachers,” said Jonathan Whitley, Regional Sales Director, Northern Europe at WatchGuard. “It is important that the information security industry supports initiatives such as Safer Internet Day and Friendly Wifi.”

“Schools, parents and guardians need to be more aware of the technologies available to give them visibility of what children are doing online and ensure they are accessing age appropriate content, while children need to understand that sharing too much personal information can make them more vulnerable to attack or cyber bullying,” adds WatchGuard’s Whitely. “And if something suspicious does happen, all those responsible need to know what to do and how to respond.”

“Working with WatchGuard is a great opportunity for us to spread the Friendly WiFi message,” said RDI spokesperson, Mike Davies. “WatchGuard’s expertise and passion for security make a valuable contribution to making a positive difference to online safety.”
