Applies To: All WatchGuard MDR Products (Except Core MDR)
You activate term and subscription licenses for WatchGuard Core MDR products (WatchGuard Core MDR for Microsoft, WatchGuard Total MDR, and WatchGuard Open MDR) and MDR service add-ons for WatchGuard products in the WatchGuard Support Center.
Activation Requirements
Some WatchGuard MDR product licenses have activation requirements. Before you activate a license, make sure that the Subscriber account meets these requirements, if applicable:
- For MDR service add-ons that monitor a specific WatchGuard product, the related product license must already be on the account. For more information, go to About WatchGuard MDR Licenses.
- For WatchGuard Total MDR, an Endpoint Security product license (WatchGuard Endpoint Security Elite, Endpoint Security 360, or Endpoint Security Prime) must be activated for the account. The number of users in the Total MDR license must match the number of endpoints in the Endpoint Security product license.
If your account has delegated access to a Service Provider account and you have allocated users from WatchGuard Total MDR, the number of users must match the total number of endpoints allocated by both the Service Provider account and any endpoints you allocate from the Endpoint Security product.
- For WatchGuard MDR Vulnerability Scanner, you must have an active WatchGuard MDR license on the same Subscriber account. You cannot activate this license alone. WatchGuard Open MDR 3rd Party Log Storage Service does not meet this requirement.
- For WatchGuard VCISO for MDR, you must have an active WatchGuard MDR license on the same Subscriber account. You cannot activate this license alone.
- For WatchGuard Open MDR 3rd Party Log Storage Service, you must have an active WatchGuard Open MDR license on the same Subscriber account. You cannot activate this license alone and it cannot coexist with any other WatchGuard MDR license.
Activate Your First License
The license activation process is different the first time you activate a license.
To activate a license for WatchGuard MDR for the first time:
- Go to https://www.watchguard.com/ and log in to your WatchGuard account with your WatchGuard account user name and password.
- On the Support Center Home page, select My WatchGuard > Activate Products.
The Activate Products page opens. - Type or paste your license key.
- Click Next.
The Activate a Product wizard begins. - If this is the first license you have activated, you are prompted to name your license. Type a name to help you identify your license on the WatchGuard.com website and in WatchGuard Cloud.
- In the Compliance section, select an option. License activation goes through regulatory checks for export compliance. For more information, go to Export Compliance (external link).
- I am activating this product for my organization — Select this option when you want to activate the product for your organization. The account must include a valid billing address.
- I am activating this product for another organization, as a reseller or intermediary — Select this option when you want to activate the product for an account you manage. You must enter the address of the end-user business.
- Click Activate.
The Activation is Complete page opens.
Your license is now active and the users on this license are automatically allocated to your account. If you are a Service Provider, the users are added to your inventory.
Log in to your WatchGuard Cloud account to manage allocation for your account and all accounts you manage. For more information, go to Allocate WatchGuard MDR Users.
If you are a Subscriber with an active trial, when you activate your first license it replaces your trial license. The trial ends and your new license becomes active effective immediately. Your new license inherits the name of your trial license. The remainder of your trial is not added to the expiration date of your new license.

Activate Additional Licenses
If you already have an active license, when you activate new license keys in the Support Center, they modify the current active license. When you activate a new license key, you have several options for how to use your license. In the activation process, you can:
- Add users to a license
- Extend a license
- Add a new license (Service Providers only)
To activate an additional license:
- Go to https://www.watchguard.com/ and log in to the WatchGuard Support Center with your WatchGuard account user name and password.
- On the Support Center Home page, select My WatchGuard > Activate Products.
The Activate Products page opens. - Type or paste your license key.
- Click Next.
The Activate a Product wizard opens. - (Service Providers only) On the Add Product Details page of the activation wizard, from the Update a License or Add a New License drop-down list:
- To extend or add users to an existing license, select the name of the license.
- To add a new license, enter a new friendly name for the license.
- In the Add Users or Extend Your License section:
- Select Add Users to add users to your license. The Change Summary shows the new count updated to match the number of users on the license you purchased.
- Select Extend License to extend the renewal date for your license. The Change Summary shows the new count and expiration date.
- Click Activate.
The Activation is in Progress page opens.
Only Service Providers can have multiple active licenses. Subscribers do not see this page in the Activate a Product wizard.
Your license is now active and the users are automatically allocated to your account. If you are a Service Provider, the users appear in your inventory.
