Troubleshoot Data Control

Applies To: WatchGuard Advanced EPDR, WatchGuard EPDR, WatchGuard EDR

WatchGuard Data Control is an optional WatchGuard Endpoint Security module available with WatchGuard EPDR and WatchGuard EDR licenses. Data Control aids compliance with data protection regulations and helps you to see and monitor Personally Identifiable Information (PII) stored in your IT infrastructure. For more information, see About Data Control.

Documents Not Detected as Personally Identifiable Information

If you have PII documents that Data Control does not correctly identify, use the PSInfo tool to contact Support and provide:

  • A description of the issue.
  • Examples of affected document, if possible.

Resource Consumption

When you enable Data Control, an on-demand scan of your endpoints runs and classifies all available documents. This scan might affect endpoint performance. To limit any performance impact, schedule Data Control to run at a time that has a minimum impact to endpoint users.

If a resource consumption issue persists, use the PSInfo tool to contact Support and provide a description of the issue.

Endless Index Process

If the Data Control index process does not complete, and the WatchGuard Endpoint Security management UI shows the index process as still active after several days, contact Support and use the PSErrorTrace tool to generate a diagnostic file that might help with your Support case.

Sample Test Files

To test that the Data Control process works as expected:

  1. Download the Data Control text files from:
    https://www.pandasecurity.com/resources/tools/datacontrol-test-file.zip (external link).
  2. Enable Data Control.
  3. Extract the files to a location on your endpoint device.

Screenshot of the text files

After a few minutes, Data Control detects that a file or files contain PII. This detection confirms that Data Control is enabled and runs as expected.

If you still have an issue, use the PSInfo tool to contact Support, provide the date and time when you downloaded and extracted the test files, and provide a time and date estimate of when Data Control indexed the files.
