Proxying and Packet Filtering

WatchGuard Firewalling Basics provides its security through two mechanisms: dynamic packet filtering and transparent application proxies.

This discussion describes packet filtering and service proxies as they relate to firewall technology; what each does, and why certain protocols need the extra security of proxying vs. filtering. It also includes discussion of stances and the ramifications of the WatchGuard Firewalling Basics stance--which is to specify everything you want to pass through the firewall and deny everything else.
