WatchGuard Wins Trifecta of Top Honors

Receives Accolades from CRN, Inc. Magazine and Information Security & Communications Privacy Magazine

Seattle, WA - February 8, 2008. WatchGuard® Technologies, a global provider of network security solutions, today announced that it recently received a series of industry honors, ranging from winning CRN magazine's UTM (unified Threat Management) bake-off review, being named as "BEST FOR: Maintaining High Security" by Inc. Magazine, and being awarded "Best UTM Product of the Year" by Information Security & Communications Privacy magazine.

"Being called out as 'the best' by several of the industry's most trusted and respected publications is an outstanding achievement and stands as a testament to the engineering prowess that WatchGuard brings to the security industry," said Eric Aarrestad, Vice President of Marketing at WatchGuard. "Without question, these accolades validate WatchGuard's strategy to provide businesses around the world with unmatched network security solutions."

CRN Test Center Gives WatchGuard First Place
In the January 18, 2008 security bake-off review, "Putting UTM To The Test," CRN Test Center gave WatchGuard their "1st Place Scorecard," citing that the WatchGuard Firebox® X Peak™ 6500e "edged out rivals with innovative proxy technology and realtime logging features." The review examined midmarket UTM appliances, focusing the round-up comparison on functionality and configuration capabilities, with an emphasis on management, levels of protection and data inspection capabilities.

Touting WatchGuard's application proxy technology, the CRN Test Center said, "WatchGuard's proxy policies are unique in the UTM space and go well beyond simple filter policies to protect client and server communication." The article continues, "What's more, proxy rules reduce network traffic because they block packet content at the firewall. Web site packets also don't have to travel through other Layer 7 features, so latency is also reduced." In conclusion, CRN states, "WatchGuard's HTTP proxies play an important role in shaping traffic in the appliance. The technology is unique in the way it interrogates data streams."

Inc. Magazine Touts WatchGuard as "BEST FOR" Maintaining High Security
Inc. Magazine, the proclaimed handbook for the American entrepreneur, gave WatchGuard a "BEST FOR" in its February issue. In its article, "Remote Control Working From Wherever," Inc. Magazine listed multiple advances in mobile technology that help people to work better than ever before from anywhere. On the subject of remote security, Inc. Magazine gave its "BEST FOR Maintaining high security" to WatchGuard's Firebox X Core e-Series UTM Bundle, as a "cool" way to "keep out hackers."

Information Security & Communications Privacy Magazine Honors WatchGuard with Product of the Year
From China, WatchGuard received the "Best UTM Product of the Year" award from one of China's leading security publications, Information Security & Communications Privacy (ISCP) Magazine. The award was given by a panel of judges comprised of ISCP editors along with industry professionals from the Institute of National Security Technology and Specialized Committee of Information Security under the China Computer Society.

WatchGuard Application Proxy Technology Provides Unmatched Security
All WatchGuard Firebox X network security solutions utilize Application Proxy firewall technology, which is fundamentally more secure than appliances that rely on packet filtering alone. Packet filtering alone inspects the bottom three-to-four layers of the OSI communication model (physical, datalink, network and transport), leaving several layers, including layer-7, the application layer, vulnerable to exploitation. By enforcing deep packet inspection in concert with Application Proxy firewall technology, WatchGuard Firebox X appliances inspect all seven layers of the OSI model, thus providing unmatched, holistic network security.

Aarrestad concludes, "Savvy customers know that for the price, high-performance and extensive security capabilities, WatchGuard's security appliances cannot be beat. It's very exciting to see the media also realize and recognize what our customers have known for years – WatchGuard truly is the best for network security."
