Co-Term Endpoint Security Licenses
Applies To: WatchGuard Advanced EPDR, WatchGuard EPDR, WatchGuard EDR, WatchGuard EDR Core, WatchGuard EPP
We recommend that you co-term your Endpoint Security licenses to make renewals easier and to get a better price for each endpoint at renewal.
When you co-terminate or co-term licenses, you consolidate or merge your licenses to synchronize renewal dates. This makes it easier to manage and renew your licenses.
Each time you activate an Endpoint Security license key and choose to add endpoints or extend a license, your new license is merged with the selected license and the two licenses are co-termed. Co-termed licenses are merged together and a new expiration date is calculated based on your updated endpoint count and the term length of the license you activated.
The license expires the day after the expiration date at 00 UTC. For more information on license expiration, go to About Endpoint Security Licenses.
Illustration of co-terming. This image shows how 2 months of 50 endpoints from a 1-year license are co-termed with another 1-year license to extend the expiration date to January 2023.
When Service Providers activate a license, they have the option to co-term the new product license with an active license for the same product or to activate it as a separate license. This allows Service Providers to keep their customer licenses separate.
Because Subscriber accounts can only have one product license, when a Subscriber activates a new license key it is automatically co-termed with the current active license and either extends the expiration date or increases the endpoint count based on the option chosen when the license is activated.
As a Service Provider, whether you choose to co-term your licenses or activate a new license, all of the endpoints go to your inventory in WatchGuard Cloud and can be allocated to any account. Endpoints from one license can be allocated to any number of different managed accounts.
Renewal Date Calculation for Co-Termed Licenses
When you co-term licenses, they are merged together and a new expiration date is calculated based on your updated endpoint count and the term length of the license you activated. The only exception to this is if you choose to extend your license and reduce your endpoint count. In that case, your endpoint count is reduced immediately.
When you co-term two licenses, this calculation determines the expiration date:
| New Expiration Date= | Today's Date+ | (current endpoint count × days until license expires) + (purchased endpoint count × term days) |
| final endpoint count |
The co-term calculation is primarily used when you add endpoints or extend your license with more endpoints than you currently have. When you activate a license with the same number of endpoints that your active license has, or with fewer endpoints, your active license is extended by the term of the license you purchased. So if you have 100 endpoints and activate a one year license with 100 endpoints, your expiration date is extended by a year.
When you upgrade from WatchGuard EPP or EDR to WatchGuard EPDR, the calculation used to determine the new expiration date accounts for the difference in cost between an EPP or EDR endpoint and an EPDR endpoint.
For example, if the MSRP for a WatchGuard EDR endpoint is $1 and the MSRP for a WatchGuard EPDR endpoint is $2, then each EDR endpoint is worth 0.5 EPDR endpoints. When you upgrade from EDR to EPDR, the calculation multiplies the value of the product with the lower MSRP by the price differential.
| New Expiration Date= | Today's Date+ | (current endpoint count × days until license expires × price differential) + (purchased endpoint count × term days) |
| final endpoint count |
The co-term calculation is the same whether you add endpoints or extend your license.
All values in these examples are for illustrative purposes only.
You have a license for 20 endpoints that expires in 45 days, and you want to add 10 endpoints on a 1 year license (you purchased a 10 endpoint license with a 1 year term length). To do so, you activate your license and select Add Endpoints in the license activation wizard.
To calculate the new expiration date for your license, use the co-term calculation formula with these values:
- Current endpoint count = 20
- Days until license expires = 45
- Purchased endpoint count = 10
- Term days for purchased endpoints= 365
- Final endpoint count = 30 endpoints (20 + 10)
| New Expiration Date = | Today's Date + | (20 endpoints x 45 days) + (10 endpoints x 365 days) |
| 30 endpoints |
When we calculate the value in the formula above, we get 4,550 ÷ 30 = 151.67. We round this value up to 152. So, the new expiration date for 30 endpoints is 152 days from the activation date of your new license.
You have a 1 year license for 10 endpoints that expires in 200 days, and you want to add 50 endpoints on a 3 year license (you purchased a 50 endpoint license with a 3 year term length). To do so, you activate your license and select Add Endpoints in the license activation wizard.
To calculate the new expiration date for your license, use the co-term calculation formula with these values:
- Current endpoint count = 10
- Days until license expires = 200
- Purchased endpoint count = 50
- Term days for purchased endpoints= 365 x 3
- Final endpoint count = 60 (10 + 50)
| New Expiration Date = | Today's Date + | (10 endpoints x 200 days) + (50 endpoints x 365 days x 3) |
| 60 endpoints |
When we calculate the value in the formula above, we get 56,750 ÷ 60 = 945.83. We round this value up to 946. So, the new expiration date for 60 endpoints is 946 days from the activation date of your new license.
You have a license for 100 endpoints that expires in 10 days, and you want to renew your license and also add 50 additional endpoints on a 1 year license (you purchased a 150 endpoint license with a 1 year term length). To do so, you activate your license and select Extend License in the license activation wizard.
To calculate the new expiration date for your license, use the co-term calculation formula with these values:
- Current endpoint count = 100
- Days until license expires = 10
- Purchased endpoint count = 150
- Term days for purchased endpoints= 365
- Final endpoint count = 150 endpoints (100 renewed + 50 added)
| New Expiration Date = | Today's Date + | (100 endpoints x 10 days) + (150 endpoints x 365 days) |
| 150 endpoints |
When we calculate the value in the formula above, we get 55,750 ÷ 150 = 371.67. We round this value up to 372. So, the new expiration date for 150 endpoints is 372 days from the activation date of your new license.
You have a license for 100 endpoints that expired 10 days ago, and you want to renew your license for another year (you purchased a 100 endpoint license with a 1 year term length). To do so, you activate your license and select Extend License in the license activation wizard.
To calculate the new expiration date for your license, use the co-term calculation formula with these values:
- Current endpoint count = 100
- Days until license expires = −10
- Purchased endpoint count = 100
- Term days for purchased endpoints = 365
- Final endpoint count = 100 endpoints
| New Expiration Date = | Today's Date + | (100 endpoints x -10 days) + (100 endpoints x 365 days) |
| 100 endpoints |
When we calculate the value in the formula above, we get 35,500 ÷ 100 = 355. So, the new expiration date for your 100 endpoints is 355 days from the activation date of your new license (the term length of your new license minus the 10 days).
You have a license for 100 endpoints that expires in 10 days, and you want to renew your license for another year with only 80 endpoints (you purchased an 80 endpoint license with a 1 year term length). To do so, you activate your license and select Extend License in the license activation wizard.
When you renew your license with fewer endpoints, you should do so near your expiration date. If you activate the license key before your expiration date, your endpoint count is reduced immediately.
To calculate the new expiration date for your license, use the co-term calculation formula with these values:
- Current endpoint count = 100
- Days until license expires = 10
- Purchased endpoint count = 80
- Term days for purchased endpoints= 365
- Final endpoint count = 80 endpoints
| New Expiration Date = | Today's Date + | (100 endpoints x 10 days) + (80 endpoints x 365 days) |
| 80 endpoints |
When we calculate the value in the formula above, we get 30,200 ÷ 80 = 377.5. We round this value up to 378. So, the new expiration date for your 80 endpoints is 378 days from the activation date of your new license.
You have a license for 20 WatchGuard EDR endpoints that expires in 45 days, and you want to upgrade to WatchGuard EPDR with a 1 year license (you purchased a 20 endpoint WatchGuard EPDR license with a 1 year term length). To do so, you activate your WatchGuard EPDR license and select Extend License in the license activation wizard.
To calculate the new expiration date for your license, use the co-term calculation formula with these values:
- Example WatchGuard EDR price for each endpoint: $1
- Example WatchGuard EPDR price for each endpoint: $2
- Product price differential: 0.5
- Current endpoint count = 20
- Days until license expires = 45
- Purchased endpoint count = 20
- Term days for purchased endpoints= 365
- Final endpoint count = 20 endpoints
| New Expiration Date = | Today's Date + | (20 endpoints x 45 days x 0.5) + (20 endpoints x 365 days) |
| 20 endpoints |
When we calculate the value in the formula above, we get 7,750 ÷ 20 = 387.5. We round this value up to 388. So, the new expiration date for your 20 WatchGuard EPDRendpoints is 388 days from the activation date of your new WatchGuard EPDR license.
Example 7 — Upgrade and Add Endpoints to an Existing License
You have an WatchGuard EDR license for 20 endpoints that expires in 45 days, and you want to upgrade to WatchGuard EPDR and add 10 additional endpoints with a 1 year license (you purchased a 10 user WatchGuard EPDR license with a 1 year term length). To do so, you activate your WatchGuard EPDR license and select Add Endpoints in the license activation wizard.
To calculate the new expiration date for your license, use the co-term calculation formula with these values:
- Example WatchGuard EDR price for each endpoint: $1
- Example WatchGuard EPDR price for each endpoint: $2
- Product price differential: 0.5
- Current endpoint count = 20
- Days until license expires = 45
- Purchased endpoint count = 10
- Term days for purchased endpoints= 365
- Final endpoint count = 30 endpoints(20 + 10)
| New Expiration Date = | Today's Date + | (20 endpoints x 45 days x 0.5) + (10 endpoints x 365 days) |
| 30 endpoints |
When we calculate the value in the formula above, we get 4,100 ÷ 30 = 136.6. We round this value up to 137. So, the new expiration date for your 30 WatchGuard EPDRendpoints is 137 days from the activation date of your newWatchGuard EPDR license.
You have a 1 year WatchGuard EDR license for 10 endpoints that expires in 200 days, and you want to upgrade to WatchGuard EPDR and add 50 endpoints on a 3 year license (you purchased a 50 endpoint WatchGuard EPDR license with a 3 year term length). To do so, you activate your WatchGuard EPDR license and select Add Endpoints in the license activation wizard.
To calculate the new expiration date for your license, use the co-term calculation formula with these values:
- Example WatchGuard EDR price for each endpoints: $1
- Example WatchGuard EPDR price for each endpoints: $2
- Product price differential: 0.5
- Current endpoint count = 10
- Days until license expires = 200
- Purchased endpoint count = 50
- Term days for purchased endpoints = 1095 (365 x 3)
- Final endpoint count = 60 endpoints(10 + 50)
| New Expiration Date = | Today's Date + | (10 endpoints x 200 days x 0.5) + (50 endpoints x 1095 days) |
| 60 endpoints |
When we calculate the value in the formula above, we get 55,750 ÷ 60 = 929.16 . We round this value up to 930. So, the new expiration date for 60 WatchGuard EPDR endpoints is 930 days from the activation date of your new WatchGuard EPDR license.
You have an WatchGuard EDR license for 100 endpoints that expires in 10 days, and you want to upgrade your license from WatchGuard EDR to WatchGuard EPDR and also add 50 additional endpoints on a 1 year license (you purchased a 150 endpoints WatchGuard EPDR license with a 1 year term length). To do so, you activate your license and select Extend License in the license activation wizard.
To calculate the new expiration date for your license, use the co-term calculation formula with these values:
- Example WatchGuard EDR price for each endpoint: $1
- Example WatchGuard EPDR price for each endpoint: $2
- Product price differential: 0.5
- Current endpoint count = 100
- Days until license expires = 10
- Purchased endpoint count = 150
- Term days for purchased endpoints= 365
- Final endpoint count = 150 endpoints (100 renewed + 50 added)
| New Expiration Date = | Today's Date + | (100 endpoints x 10 days x 0.5) + (150 endpoints x 365 days) |
| 150 endpoints |
When we calculate the value in the formula above, we get 55,250 ÷ 150 = 368.33. We round this value up to 369. So, the new expiration date for 150 WatchGuard EPDR endpoints is 369 days from the activation date of your new Total Identity Security license.
You have an WatchGuard EDR license for 100 endpoints that expires in 10 days, and you want to upgrade from WatchGuard EDR toWatchGuard EPDR and renew your license for another year with only 80 endpoints (you purchased an 80 endpoint WatchGuard EPDR license with a 1 year term length).
- Example WatchGuard EDR price for each endpoint: $1
- Example WatchGuard EPDR price for each endpoint: $2
- Product price differential: 0.5
- Current endpoint count = 100
- Days until license expires = 10
- Purchased endpoint count = 80
- Term days for purchased endpoints= 365
- Final endpoint count = 80
| New Expiration Date = | Today's Date + | (100 endpoints x 10 days x 0.5) + (80 endpoints x 365 days) |
| 80 endpoints |
When we calculate the value in the formula above, we get 29,700 ÷ 80 = 371.25. We round this value up to 372. So, the new expiration date for 80 WatchGuard EPDRendpoints is 372 days from the activation date of your new WatchGuard EPDR license.
