Frequently Asked Questions
WatchGuard® for MSS
General Questions
Q: What is WatchGuard® for MSS?
A: WatchGuard for Managed Security Services (MSS) is designed to meet the demands of Managed Security Service Providers (MSSPs) who require fast provisioning and centralized management of their customers' security. By deploying our model-upgradeable, integrated security appliances, you can meet the growing needs of customers while maintaining a low operating cost. In addition, our industry-leading LiveSecurity® Service keeps you informed and in control of your customers' security. WatchGuard for MSS consists of three components:
- Software: WatchGuard System Manager - MSS Edition 7.2 (WSM - MSS), is the software MSSPs install and run to manage WatchGuard appliances. WatchGuard System Manager - MSS Edition is comprised of the fast provisioning and centralized management capabilities in Global Policy Manager (GPM), and the secure logging and rich reporting engine of WatchGuard Event Processor (WEP).
- Firebox® Security Appliances: MSSPs can deploy and remotely manage Firebox® X, Firebox® SOHO 6, and Firebox® III appliances with WSM - MSS Edition.
- LiveSecurity® Service: MSSPs get 24/7 support, software maintenance, and the ability to rebrand LiveSecurity alerts and notifications.
Q: How has the management software name changed for version 7.2?
A: The WatchGuard for MSS NOC Suite is now called WatchGuard System Manager - MSS Edition. The software is still comprised of Global Policy Manager (GPM) and WatchGuard Event Processor (WEP).
Q: Can current MSS partners sell and manage Firebox® X?
A: Yes. MSS partners will need to install and/or upgrade their software to the new WSM - MSS Edition 7.2 version to manage Firebox X appliances. WSM-MSS Edition now provides support for the new Firebox X, added support for the optional 3-Port and High Availability Upgrade Bundle, and management of optional security services like WebBlocker and SpamScreen.
Q: What's new in WSM - MSS Edition 7.2?
A: WSM-MSS Edition 7.2 now supports all the capabilities of the WatchGuard System Manager 7.2 release, including the ability to provision, manage, and monitor Firebox® X appliances. WSM - MSS Edition 7.2 still includes the familiar Global Policy Manager (GPM) and WatchGuard Event Processor (WEP) components for centralized management and logging.
Additional management capabilities include:
- Model upgradeability of an existing Firebox X with a license key
- The 3-Port and High Availability Upgrade Bundle for Firebox X
- Centralized control of Mobile User VPN and Branch Office VPN traffic through the HTTP and FTP proxies
- NIC property control on Firebox X and Firebox III appliances
- License enforcement of each appliance under management
MSSPs are contractually obligated to maintain a valid and current LiveSecurity Service subscription for every Firebox appliance under management so that they can distribute patches and updates to their customers. MSSPs need to register all managed Fireboxes with LiveSecurity, generate LiveSecurity Feature Keys, and deploy the Feature Keys to the managed Fireboxes. Fireboxes with invalid or expired Feature Keys will no longer log to the WEP.
Q: Which appliances will WSM - MSS Edition 7.2 manage?
A: WSM - MSS Edition 7.2 will support Firebox® X, Firebox® SOHO 6, and Firebox® III appliances. There is no support for Firebox® II appliances. MSSPs that are migrating customers from Firebox II to Firebox X appliances will need to run two versions of the WSM - MSS Edition software side by side in the network operations center during the migration, in order to manage both types of appliances.
Q: How do I buy WatchGuard for MSS and product options?
