Avoid clicking links in Swine Flu emails

30 April 09 -- As you know, everyone is freaking out about Swine Flu. Last night, I watched my daughter wash her hands no less than five times in one hour because her school instilled the fear of God in her over this potential pandemic. But I'm not here to talk about Swine Flu, I want to talk about the recent email activity it has spawned.

To anyone that follows security, it comes as no surprise to learn that spammers like to take advantage of pop culture and big news stories to help them spread their malware. The Swine Flu is no exception. SPAMfighter, an antispam company, has seen a 10 million spam increase since the Swine Flu outbreak began. Other security firms have also confirmed the same increase in Swine Flu related spam.

Whether we like it or not, we're going to be hearing a lot about the Swine Flu in the upcoming weeks and months. So you might as well give yourself a break and avoid looking at Swine Flu email. At the very least, avoid clicking any link in a Swine Flu email as it may redirect to a site that's trying to infect your PC with a "flu."-- Corey Nachreiner, CISSP
