Here comes another big Microsoft Patch Day
5 June 09 -- Last month, Microsoft gave us a nice break with a super light patch day. Unfortunately, they return in full force this month with patches galore. According to their Advanced
Notification for June, Microsoft plans on releasing ten security bulletins on Tuesday 10 June; six of which they rate as Critical. The bulletins will fix:
- Six flaws in Windows, two rated Critical
- Flaws in Internet Explorer (IE), rated Critical
- Three flaws in Office (including Word and Excel), rated Critical
Come Tuesday, you're going to have a busy day of patching. You'll most likely want to install those that address critical vulnerabilities as soon as possible, considering they usually allow remote attackers to gain complete control of your computer. About a week ago, I warned LiveSecurity customers of a new zero day vulnerability affecting Direct X 9 and below. Hopefully, one of Microsoft's "Windows" patches will fix that flaw. If so, you'll want to apply the patch quickly as attackers are already exploiting that flaw in the wild.
With such a hectic Patch Day on the horizon, inform your IT staff to be ready to download, test, and deploy a bunch of updates next Tuesday. We'll know more about these flaws on Tuesday 10 June, and will publish
alerts about them via LiveSecurity and LiveSecurity Informer. -- Corey Nachreiner,
