First 2010 Microsoft Patch Day primarily affects Win2K
administrators
8 January, 2010 -- I'm happy to report that Microsoft will
ease IT administrators into their patch cycle this year. According to
their Advance
Notification, Microsoft only plans to release a single security
bulletin on Tuesday, January 12. Furthermore, that bulletin only
critically affects Windows 2000 (Win2K) computers.
Since the bulletin fixes a critical security issue, Win2K
administrators will still want to patch it as quickly as possible.
Also, the bulletin does affect other variants of Windows, but
to a much lesser extent (Microsoft gives it a Low severity rating in
other versions of Windows). If you manage non-Win2K versions of Windows
you should still patch, you just don't have to do it as quickly.
As an aside... Although Microsoft's Patch Day will be light, I
expect Adobe will release their security bulletins on the same day,
including the bulletin to fix a zero day Adobe Reader flaw we reported
in a previous
LiveSecurity alert (subscription required). Make sure to plan for
the Adobe fixes as well.
We'll know more about this bulletin next Tuesday, and will publish
an alert about it via LiveSecurity and LiveSecurity Informer.
