Block ad-serving cookies in both IE and Firefox
Most users want to surf with more confidence that their personal
information is not being collected by behavior tracking companies.
Internet Explorer users can add Web sites to IE's Restricted sites zone
to block pop-ups, cookies, and browser helper objects (BHOs). But identifying sites you don't
trust on your own is just an impossible task, so many IE users rely on
Eric Howe's IE-SPYAD. IE-SPYAD is an enormous block list of sites that
use annoying third party advertisers and are affiliated with
spyware-caliber adware. Download and run the IE-SPYAD batch file utility,
and the full list of sites to avoid automatically installs in your
IE Restricted sites zone. Great stuff!
Is there an equally effective solution for Firefox users? Yes. Wladimir Palant's Adblock Plus is particularly effective when used in combination
with Adblock Filterset.G Updater. You can configure Updater to
automatically download new versions of Graham Pierce's Filterset.G block
list. Learn more about Adblock Plus and Filterset.G Updater.
Once you've installed these block lists, take a moment to thank the
antispyware and open source folks who donate time and talent to make
your Web experience a little more comfortable. If you can't contribute
money to the cause, acknowledge their hard work with a thank you e-mail. --David M. Piscitello, President, Core Competence
